Tell me how you smoke and I'll tell you who you are

How many ways are there to consume cannabis? One, responds to those who don't smoke cannabis. Two, says anyone who saw a bong by chance at university. Infinite, we answer, who know the substance and all its uses well!

Dried cannabis inflorescences can be used in a thousand ways , and not all of them involve burning the substance. There are those who like to take cannabis as an infusion , leaving the leaves and branches to macerate in boiling water; those who prefer to use it as a secret ingredient for slightly special cakes and biscuits and then there are those who love smoking it, but - even in this case - the ways are multiplying.

Even for those who choose the most classic intake method there is, cannabis reveals many surprises . Anyone who thinks that the only possible way to smoke cannabis is with a joint is wrong. And in this article we will prove it to you... Come with us on this journey to discover the most popular ways to smoke cannabis, you won't regret it!

What are bongs and how to use them

The bong, also called water pipe , is an object used to inhale the smoke of marijuana, but also other substances such as hashish, salvia divinorum and tobacco. The term derives from “ Thai baung ”, the section of bamboo cane used to build the first prototypes. Some bongs vary from item to item: they are objects of great beauty, usually made of plexiglass, ceramic, bamboo or glass.

It can consist of several elements, but some of them are present in all models:

- the mouthpiece, where the lips are placed to suck in the air;

- the chamber, where the smoke is contained. When enough smoke accumulates in the chamber, it can be aspirated. The height and width of the chamber change based on the size and volume of the object;

- the base, in which the water is contained. It is usually wider than the chamber and serves as the base for the bong. It can be removable, to facilitate water changes;

- the stem, also called joint or pipette, which allows the smoke to pass through the water when the bong is in use. It is a small glass tube that comes out of the base and protrudes higher than the water level. Inside the stem there is the housing of the substance to be smoked;

- the brazier, usually removable, in which the substance to be smoked is placed. It can be made of metal, glass or ceramic but filling the brazier remains a constant.

Usually the bong is airtight, but in some cases it may have a hole called a "clutch" , which must be covered with a finger to take a hit correctly. Even in the absence of a clutch, however, there is not 100% airtightness, since even the removable brazier favors the passage of small quantities of air.

To hit the bong, the smoker must draw deeply from the top mouth, so that the smoke rises up the air chamber after passing through the water at the bottom. Bongs are designed to cool the smoke , collecting a large amount of it in the air chamber and then drawing it quickly.

Use the vaporizer

Vaporizers are devices that heat cannabis without burning it, bringing it to a temperature that allows the active ingredient to be released . This process does not generate the toxic substances produced by combustion, which are the basis of lung cancer and many other pathologies linked to cigarette smoking. What is inhaled by those who use a vaporizer is only vapor rich in active ingredients.

There are two techniques used, conduction and convection , which differ in the way in which the substance to be vaporized is heated.

In conduction vaporizers the herb and the heating element are in direct contact, while in convection vaporizers the plant material is heated with a flow of hot air and never directly touches the coil.

Conduction vaporizers are cheaper than convection ones, but still expose them to the risk of combustion if not used correctly: if the chopped cannabis is not exposed to heat in a uniform manner, in fact, it could burn, ruining the entire operation.

Vaporizers are of two types:

  • Portable vaporizers, devices aesthetically very similar to an electronic cigarette, are equipped with a rechargeable battery.
  • Desktop vaporizers, which are larger in size than portable ones. They can be connected to a power outlet to cope with long smoking sessions, or they can be used with the battery, whose life, however, is very short.

The joint

Here is what has been the most used method of cannabis consumption for decades. It's not the healthiest, but it's certainly the one that requires the least organization and guarantees very low costs. To prepare a rolled joint you need dried light marijuana inflorescences, tobacco, a cardboard filter and paper. First you need to grind the herb using your fingers or a grinder ; then you have to add the tobacco to the "mixture" you just obtained; then the mix of cannabis and tobacco is inserted into the paper and - after having prepared a filter - the joint is closed and smoked .

An important factor to take into consideration, in addition to the quality of the herb, is the quality of the papers , since they decide how your joint will burn. Thin papers allow more air to pass through, which slows down the burning of the joint, while thick ones will make the joint burn perfectly. However, thick papers lead us to smoke more paper. To reduce it you need to learn to flag roll . You need to take the paper and position it so that the glue strip looks downwards, then insert the mixture and proceed with the closure. There will be a piece of paper left over, which you will need to tear to complete the work.

There are many methods for rolling particular, powerful and beautiful joints to look at. One of them is the tulip , also known as the artichoke , a rather strong consumption method, which can give intense and prolonged highs .

To roll into a tulip you will need:

► king size papers

► grass and tobacco

► King size paper filters

► Cotton thread

First of all you need to prepare the "stem" of the tulip, rolling up the king size filter and inserting it inside two papers, for a length of about 6 cm. To prepare the bulb, however, you need to form a square by joining two king size papers. Then fold the upper right corner inwards, leaving the glue strip exposed. Do the same thing with the lower left corner and then you can glue the flaps together.

The different substances contained in cannabis have different boiling temperatures and are released only when each evaporation point is reached.

Vaporizing weed also allows you to enjoy a tastier, more potent and pure experience, because it allows you to take advantage of over 95% of the active ingredients contained in cannabis. Consider that from a joint you will get 10% of it , if you are lucky. The optimal temperature for vaporizing cannabis is between 180° and 210°C: temperatures lower than 190°C tend to produce a more cerebral effect called buzz high , while if higher they determine a more corporeal and physical high called body high .

Combustion, however, generates many harmful substances - first of all carbon monoxide - and its effects do not differ much from those of tobacco smoke. The temperature obtained with combustion is around 600° , and as we have seen is much higher than the boiling point of cannabis cannabinoids.
